I know many people who like going to the movies by themselves. They say that they like the experience of being alone in the theatre. They say that the are no social pressures when you are alone. They say that they enjoy the movie more if they see it alone. After all, you don’t have to speak (or listen) to anyone else. You can completely immerse yourself in the movie.
I can understand the appeal, but it’s not for me. I don’t know about you, but I have never enjoyed going to the movies by myself. Because I don’t like being alone. I don’t like the absence of human interaction. I want people around me. There is, however, something worse that being alone, and that is feeling alone.
Do you ever feel alone? I do. I often feel most alone when I am going through trials. When things are hard and I don’t know what to do. I feel alone when there is illness in the family. I feel alone when we are still dealing with the same behaviors and issues that we were dealing with a year ago…that we were dealing with two years ago. I feel alone when I have run out of patience hours before bedtime. I feel alone when I think about our kids histories.
Yet, it is at those moments when the Lord reminds me that he is with me. It is in those deep waters that I need to remember that he is with me. It is in those time of struggle, that, if I can quiet myself for a moment I will hear him say “I am with you.” It is in our times of struggle that we need to remember that he is with us and that he is for us. It is in those difficult times that we are actually far from alone, even though we may feel alone.
Lord, There are times when I feel alone. Help me to remember that it is when I feel alone that you are with me. Teach me to lean into you in times of struggle when the waters are deep. Let me rest in the knowledge that you are with me.
In Jesus name, Amen
When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. – Isaiah 43:2 (NLT)
