run with endurance

I have the greatest respect for people who run marathons. I can’t imagine the physical and mental strength required to run 26.2 miles. I have friends who run marathons. We have a lot in common, we like the same movies and restaurants, we like the same sports and the same teams, but we part ways at mile 1 of 26.2.

A marathon is a great life metaphor. Both require endurance. We need strength to make it across the finish line. We need to keep going despite fatigue, stress, and any other adversity we may face. Life is like a marathon because life is hard. We have to deal with illness, and job loss, and broken relationships, and death and we struggle to hold on in the face of it all. And in all of that, we are told in Hebrews that we must the race with endurance.

Parenting is a marathon too, it is hard work and requires us to run with endurance. We signed up for 26.2 miles the day we welcomed our children home. Parenting requires us to do the hard work necessary to run the race well. The hard work that allows us to see past our kids behaviors and see them for who they really are. The hard work of understanding their histories, and understanding their traumas, and understanding how those impact them. The hard work of dealing with our stuff so that we can be fully present and help them heal. The hard work that makes our compassion come alive and allows us to have the empathy necessary to run the race with endurance.

No matter what adversity we face, no matter how many struggles we have to deal with we have to keep going. We have to stay connected to Jesus. We have to run the race with endurance. We have to finish well.

Lord, there are days that I struggle and doubt that I can run well. There are times that I question my endurance. Thank you for being with me every step of the way. Help me to fight through the noise of this life and hear you say, “you can do this, I am with you.” Please let my life be an example of running with endurance and finishing well.

In Jesus name, Amen

“Let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” – Hebrews 12:1 (NLT)
