Some of our kids have seen and experienced things that nobody should have as a part of their story. Many of them have much darkness condensed into a small period of time. They are still children after all. There are days that I get angry as I think about their stories and I wonder where the justice is for them. If I am honest, though, my anger isn’t so much about the fact that things haven’t been made right, it’s that they haven’t been made right on my schedule.

That is why I love Isaiah 40 so much, it is a favorite chapter for many. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. quoted it in his famous “I Have a Dream Speech” to encourage those in attendance that the Lord would ensure that justice came to those who were waiting for it.

We are promised that every valley will be raised up and that every mountain and hill will be made low. He tells us that the rough ground will become level, and the rugged places made a plain.

We want justice for our kids. It’s natural, but our version of justice often amounts to vengeance. We want those who hurt our kids to pay, but vengeance, like justice, belong to the Lord and we have to love and protect our kids while we wait on him to set things right.

Prayer

Lord, there are days that I am sad and there are days that I am angry. I know that you are a just God and that you love my kids more than I do. Please quiet my spirit and help me rest in your timing and plan.
