We often remind people of a simple, but important fact: adoption and foster care are not for everyone, and that’s ok. However, praying caring for children in need is something that virtually everyone can get involved in.
People who serve by adopting or fostering aren’t any better – or any worse – than those serve in other ways. The reality is that with so many kids in foster care, there is a seemingly limitless amount of needs. While adoption and foster care is the right choice for some, others may be called and gifted to reach out and care for these children in a variety of other ways.
For some this may mean becoming a volunteer mentor to work with older children in foster care to help provide them with valuable life skills and a listening ear. TRAC is a local organization that organizes a mentoring program for the hundreds of local teens that ‘age out’ of the foster care system every year.
For others this may mean becoming a trained advocate through an organization such as your local CASA (court appointed special advocates). CASA advocates speak up for the best interest of foster children in court, and in the process become a vital part of the team that is responsible for meeting the needs of the children in care. There are CASA chapters in Dallas, Tarrant, Collin and Denton counties.
However you are led to reach out and serve children in foster care, we at Tapestry want to help you. Contact us at tapestry@irvingbible.org to let us know how we can support and cheer you on.
