Over 100,000 children in foster care in the United States are waiting to call someone mom or dad – that number overwhelms me. In Texas alone there are over 4000 children waiting. After hearing those numbers, I started comparing the number of children in foster care to our resources in Texas, and I immediately thought “that’s doable.” There should be enough families to adopt 4000 children. After all, there are over 25,000 churches in Texas and millions of eligible parents. And, of course, this is Texas. Don’t we do everything bigger and better? Wouldn’t we love to be the first state to boast that we have no waiting children in our foster care system?
Focus on the Family has teamed with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to find families for these 4000 children currently waiting to be a son or a daughter through an event called Wait No More. The Wait No More events are happening all over Texas. The next one will be this Saturday, June 1, 2013 in Plano, Texas at One Community Church. To register for this free event and learn more about becoming a forever family for a child in foster care, go to http://icareaboutorphans.org/whatwedo/waitnomore/texas-dallas/.
I have also had the honor of working with many of these children and teens over the years — those who are waiting and those who are waiting no more. One amazing young woman said that when she turned 12, she knew her chances of being adopted were slim. She knew the statistics, as do many of the foster children. She will never forget the day when her caseworker called her to let her know a family would like her to be their daughter. She cannot tell this story without tears. You cannot hear her story without tears. This amazing, creative, beautiful, faithful, and loving daughter now has the opportunity to become all that God wanted her to be.
Maybe God is calling you to adopt, maybe God is calling you to adopt through foster care, if so, come and check out the Wait No More event this Saturday. Tapestry will also be there to offer our full support. Stop by our table and learn more about how we can support you before, during and after your adoption.
