Love is patient and kind

I’ve never attended a wedding where Paul’s passage on love wasn’t included in the ceremony and I imagine that you haven’t either. 1 Corinthians 13 is one of the most famous passages of in all of scripture. It’s almost up there with John 3:16 in terms of being well know. In it, Paul explains how our actions need to be motivated by love.

The first three verses follow the same format, If I do great things (speak in tongues, prophesy, give everything to the poor), but do not have love it is of no value and gains me nothing. Paul makes it very clear that our actions need to be motivated by love.

Starting in verse four, Paul gives a list of the attributes of love. I was reading the passage and the first two attributes stopped me in my tracks. Love is patient and kind. Those were hard words to read because there are days that my kids would not describe me as patient or kind.

I know that I miss the mark in my interactions with them. I know that my responses are not always what they need to be. But my love needs to be patient and kind because God’s love for me is patient and kind. And those times when I am not patient with my kids or kind to them I need to repair my mistakes as soon as possible. I need to apologize and seek their forgiveness and then I need to do things differently. I need to love them with the same patience and kindness that the Father loves me with.

Lord, help me to be patient with my children and kind to them. I want my actions to be motivated by love. I know that the road of healing is long and requires patience. Please let me be the parent they need me to be.

In Jesus name, Amen
